The cardiology component includes 79 researchers, 115 nurses and research professionals, as well as 133 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding scientific productivity and their contribution to advancing knowledge. One of these researchers in 2021 was among the world’s most influential in clinical medicine. The mission of the cardiology component is to discover in order to prevent and to cure cardiovascular diseases.
These diseases affect in Canada two people out of ten in the population aged over 20 and are responsible for more than 20% of the deaths, making it the second leading cause of mortality in this country. The Institute is the most important tertiary care centre for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders in Canada and an internationally recognized leader in a number of fields, including metabolic cardiology, cardiac valve diseases and circulatory imaging. The close synergy with the research makes it a model for the knowledge and technology transfer into the clinic. The researchers and the clinician scientists are working in chairs, clinical and basic research teams as well as central laboratories. They use a wide range of strategies and tools including epidemiology, molecular/cellular biology, multi-omics approaches, preclinical studies, clinical trials as well as evaluative research. The institutional biobank is one of the richest in Canada. The cardiology component of this biobank makes available to researchers more than 36,000 samples that are used to carry out innovative projects. The scientific publications that result from the use of our biobank contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the improvement of clinical practices.
