L'asthme est une maladie inflammatoire des voies respiratoires. Il est maintenant bien accepté que c'est une maladie hétérogène, entre autres dû à sa grande variabilité de réponse aux divers traitements disponibles. Dans les dernières décennies, des groupes de recherche ont identifié différents phénotypes de la maladie. Un phénotype est un sous-groupe de personnes qui, par leurs caractéristiques cliniques, se ressemblent. Cela a permis de mieux orienter les traitements des patients asthmatiques. Cependant, l'arrivée de nouvelles molécules biologiques nous montre qu'il y a encore beaucoup à faire. Il semble en effet que la pathophysiologie de la maladie n'est pas bien comprise.
Description des travaux
Dre Côté et son équipe visent à identifier de nouveaux (sous-groupes) dans la population asthmatique basés sur des biomarqueurs facilement accessibles en clinique les groupes ainsi formés se nomment endotypes. Leur but est de faire un lien entre la clinique et la pathophysiologie afin de mieux utiliser les thérapies ciblées actuellement disponibles et même de contribuer au développement de nouvelles molécules. Cette approche a déjà montré des bénéfices dans d'autres maladies comme le cancer.
